Sanam Puri Early Life

On June 30, 1992, Sanam Puri was born in Muscat, Oman, to Indian parents. His mother, Anita Puri, stays at home while his father, Samir Puri, is a businessman. Sanam’s father served as his first music instructor while he was growing up in a musical family. Sanam started studying the piano at the age of six, and he quickly moved on to the guitar and drums. In addition, he played cricket for his school team and was a gifted player.

Sanam finished his education at the Indian School in Muscat, Oman. To continue his education, he subsequently relocated to Mumbai and enrolled in the University of Mumbai to study commerce. But soon, his passion for music overcame all else, and he decided to pursue a career in it.

Sanam Puri Career

Former schoolmates Venky S, also known as Venkat Subramaniyam (bass guitar), and Samar Puri decided to start a band in 2003. Samar recruited Sanam to play vocals for the group.

They all relocated to India for college after finishing their education. They all became involved in the college rock scene when he was a student, and Sanam began to compete in singing competitions, winning each one. He was also a member of the band “Bandish” in Delhi. Through the college rock circuit, Venky got to know drummer Keshav Dhanraj and the two of them started a band called “The Previous Band.”

The group didn’t last long because two of its members attended the Musical Institute in Los Angeles. In 2009, Sanam and his brother went to Mumbai to pursue a music career. Venky was the one who brought the band members back together, and together they competed as “SQS Project” in the 2010 Times Music Supastars national competition.

The first album “Supastars” was released by the band under the name SQS Supastars/Project.

The band got to know Ben Thomas, Managing Director of Kurian & Co Talent Management in 2012; the company had handled the careers of musicians like Vishal-Shekhar and Sonu Nigam. The group has released multiple compilation albums, including In Love with Sanam (2017), Sanam Revisited (2015), Universally Sanam (2019), and Memories Vol. 1 (2020), in addition to two more studio albums, Samar Sanam (2011) and Sanam Revolution (2018). The group gained popularity by posting their songs on YouTube. Their first song to do so was a cover of “Ainvayi Ainvayi,” which was posted in October 2012.

The band received recognition from YouTube in 2015. With the Bollywood song “Dhat Teri Ki” from the 2013 movie “Gori Tere Pyar Mein,” Sanam Puri made his stage debut.

The band also released their first OST, “Main Hoon,” for “The Amazing Spider-Man 2” that same year.

The band renamed itself as Sanam in 2014; the words Sanskrit, Urdu, Persian, and Arabic all mean “love.” He debuted as a playback singer in Telugu in 2014 with the song “E Kadha” from the movie Chandamama Kathalu.
